Job Description

  • Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Junior Machinery Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and analyzing day-to-day machinery problems, troubleshooting machinery issues, and liaising with manufacturers or technical experts to understand and improve reliability issues that affect plant operations at the Air Products Kochi facility. They work under the guidance of the Machinery Manager and alongside the Shift Engineer and Plant Supervisor to ensure the smooth and reliable operation and maintenance of plant machinery, aiming for the highest plant reliability and availability.
  • The Kochi Plant is Air Products' first fully owned and operated plant in India. It represents a significant investment and includes state-of-the-art technology, making it an advanced hydrogen plant within the corporation. The plant consists of two large Technip Steam Methane Reformers (SMR) with Air Products PSA units for hydrogen purification, an Air Products Air Separation Unit (ASU) producing nitrogen, one syngas unit, and one gas turbine generator power block.
  • The maintenance scope for production plants, equipment, and associated systems includes compressors, motors, fans, pumps (cryogenic and others), pressure vessels and piping systems, relief valves, heat exchangers, furnaces, burners, cryogenic turbines, and the gas turbine. The customer is Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), and the Air Products plant is located within the customer’s site. The products from Air Products plants directly support the customer’s refinery expansion. There is a high level of integration between BPCL and Air Products regarding feedstocks, products, and utilities. The products are critical to refinery unit operations, and the plant operates continuously with a strong emphasis on high reliability and efficiency, with contractual penalties for underperformance.
  • Air Products owns, operates, and maintains hydrogen plants and ASUs worldwide, with operations in over 50 countries, more than 100 hydrogen plants, and 350 ASUs. This global presence provides a wealth of expertise and well-established work processes for the reliable and efficient operation of plants.
  • Key responsibilities include providing machinery diagnostic services, troubleshooting machinery issues using vibration diagnostic tools, conducting root cause analysis investigations, issuing failure analysis reports, and making recommendations for reliability improvements. The Junior Machinery Engineer also conducts turbo-machinery health and performance assessments, develops machinery job packs for inspections and overhauls, participates in bad actor resolution programs to improve machinery reliability, and supports the installation and commissioning of new machinery. They provide technical supervision during machinery overhauls, aiming to ensure 100% machine reliability and plant availability.
  • Other responsibilities include developing and maintaining machinery condition monitoring programs, implementing initiatives to enhance the safety, reliability, or efficiency of rotating equipment, identifying cost-saving opportunities in spare parts through reverse engineering, and developing technical capabilities within the country’s maintenance organizations. They also regularly evaluate the effectiveness of maintenance programs, analyze data to reduce operating and maintenance costs, and actively participate in safety programs while promoting teamwork and communication.
  • The equipment supported includes gas turbines, gas compressors (centrifugal and reciprocating), multistage pumps, cooling water systems, cryogenic pumps, gas expanders, and other machinery.
  • The minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with at least five years of experience in machinery engineering and maintenance in industries such as refineries, ammonia, methanol, chemical processes, power generation, or marine industries. Candidates must have strong technical knowledge of machinery installation, commissioning, and maintenance of large rotating equipment, familiarity with engineering standards, vibration diagnostic skills, troubleshooting skills, and root cause analysis techniques. Proficiency in MS Office, SAP, and project management tools is essential, along with strong communication skills in English. Knowledge of Hindi is an advantage. Candidates should be willing to travel within India and overseas to provide machinery support.
  • This specialized role requires a passion for machinery, the ability to provide 24/7 machinery support during crises affecting plant reliability or availability, and a willingness to travel as needed for machinery commissioning or outages.
